Pang Ladakh Campsite

Leh, Ladakh, India Location Type : Road Side

Pang: High-Altitude Desert Camping

Located at over 15,000 feet on the legendary Manali-Leh Highway, Pang serves as a vital and dramatic stopover. Surrounded by unique soil formations and the vastness of the high-altitude desert, it offers a raw, rugged experience for those transiting toward Leh.

Camping & Facilities

The Setup: The area provides open, flat ground where you can pitch your tent or park your vehicle for an overnight overlanding stay.

Paid Alternatives: If you need a break from your own gear, there are paid campsites nearby that offer pre-set tents and basic bedding.

Local Hospitality: The local "dhaba" tents are the heart of Pang. If you prefer, you can stay with them, which often includes a warm meal and a communal atmosphere—a great way to support the local economy in this remote region.

Permissions & Etiquette

The Permission Rule: Much of the suitable land is managed by local operators. Always ask the locals or Army personnel for camping permission in a humble tone before you begin your setup.

Respect Nature: Keep the site clean and respect nature. At this extreme altitude, waste does not decompose easily, and resources are scarce. Ensure you pack out every bit of trash you bring in.

Pro-Tip: Pang is one of the highest points on the route where travelers stay overnight. Altitude Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a serious risk here; ensure you are well-acclimatized before sleeping at this elevation. Additionally, the winds in the afternoon can be fierce—ensure your tent is exceptionally well-staked or use your vehicle as a windbreak.
