Camping at Gunji – A Safe Shelter on the Road to Om Parvat

On our return journey from the breathtaking Om Parvat, night fell quicker than expected, and we found ourselves searching for a safe spot to camp in the remote mountain terrain. That’s when we came across a PWD (Public Works Department) Shed located near the BRO (Border Roads Organisation) camp in Gunji — a small resting shelter built for travelers and workers.

With darkness setting in and rain clouds looming above, we knew we needed not just a place to camp, but a covered and secure location — and this public shed was just that. It provided enough space to pitch our tents under shelter, protecting us from any overnight rain or mountain winds.

Nearby, there were a few modest houses where BRO workers were living. We approached them respectfully to ask for permission. To our relief, they welcomed us warmly and even allowed us to use water from their tank. Their hospitality in such a remote high-altitude village was truly heartwarming.

Though basic, this setup felt safe and practical. If you’re ever in a similar situation on this route, this PWD shed at Gunji can be a real lifesaver. Just remember to leave no trash behind, respect the place, and keep it clean for the next traveler who might need it.
