After exploring the fascinating Balasinor Dinosaur Museum and Fossil Park, we were on the lookout for a spot to pitch our tent for the night. Just a short walk from the fossil park, we came across a surprisingly ideal location — an unused temporary helipad built during the inauguration of the museum for visiting VVIPs.

If by chance you are not able to camp here, you can camp in the parking lot of Fassil Park, near a Mahadev Temple, with permission of the Pujari.

Though not our usual choice — we typically prefer camping near a natural water source like a river or lake — we had to make an exception this time, as no such spot was nearby. By the time we returned from the museum around 6:30 PM, daylight was quickly fading, and we knew we had to set up camp before it got dark.

The helipad area, though basic, offered a flat and open space with clear skies overhead — perfect for stargazing later that night. It’s important to note that the land belongs to local villagers, and while the helipad is no longer operational, we highly recommend seeking verbal permission for safety and courtesy. There’s a small pan shop near the site where you can ask the locals — they were friendly and had no issue with us staying as long as we didn’t cause any disturbance.

Camping next to a prehistoric site, surrounded by the legacy of creatures that once roamed this land, was a surreal experience. Though not by a lake or river, this offbeat campsite left us with a story we’ll never forget.
